Review: Sex and the CIty 2 (15) 8/10

Posted by Jo Kelly on May 28, 2010 10:31 AM |

Tina Miles reviews: IT HAS been two years since we last caught up with Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda in Upper East Side Manhattan.

So what happened to the girls after they got their happy ending?

Sex And The City fans may be worried the long-awaited sequel will disappoint.

But fear not ladies, forget any damning reviews you may have read - this is a must for anyone who loves the Manolo-wearing fashionistas, the hugely popular TV series and the 2008 hit film.

From the moment the unmistakable theme tune plays, the excitement begins because that means the much-loved ladies are back on the big screen!

We've shared a lot with these characters, they've even helped some of us through bad times and break-ups, and let's face it Sex And The City is a big deal to women.

Yes, there isn't a groundbreaking plot, but this was never meant to be anything more than a witty and entertaining film to enjoy with your best friends and celebrate sisterhood.

So in that way, Sex And The City 2 certainly delivers.

The flashbacks of the girls and their fashion faux pas, including Carrie's unruly perm, and the campest civil partnership scene with Liza Minnelli that kicks off the film, may be silly but are the type of laugh-out-loud funny moments that continue for the two-and-a-half hours.

The action in the movie takes place largely in Abu Dhabi but was shot in Morocco, with the four friends travelling from their beloved New York on an all expenses paid girlie holiday that Samantha Jones (Liverpool's Kim Cattrall) has organised.

Of course it is man eater Samantha who ends up shocking the locals with her sexual escapades, and it wouldn't be true to the character if she wasn't caught up in some outrageous moments.

The film has already been criticised for causing a controversy and even accused of being "anti-Muslim", which on inspection is unfair.

In one scene, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha, Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) are rescued by Muslim women who take off their burqas to reveal the designer outfits they are hiding beneath their black robes.

Sex And The City 2 is not meant to cause offence. Certainly, it's about four sexually-liberated American girls who are experiencing the culture of the Middle East.

But it's also about friendships, marriage, children and careers - all core to the movie.
Thankfully there is still enough of the Sex And The City sparkle, with fabulous frocks, two sex scenes (both involving Samantha - once with the best man at the gay wedding, the other with a rugged architect) and plenty of naked men. Hurray!

The film's release is well-timed to counter the testosterone of the World Cup and should bring those Carrie fans to the cinema in till-ringing droves.
