Believe the hype: The Dark Knight is that good... but it's not all Heath Ledger's show...

Wanted - the Matrix's bloodier, whinier cousin
Posted by Gary Stewart on July 24, 2008 1:27 PM

THERE'S a scene in Wanted where the hero, an office drone who's thrown off the shackles of work-a-day drudgery to be a bullet-spewing hunky super assassin, tries on a pair of wraparound shades and then decides they're 'too much'.
It's a nod to the Matrix, a film which Wanted apes throughout, but that's about the only time anything is 'too much' in this bloody, stylish, sometimes thrilling, but rather stupid action adventure for grown-up kids.
Fitzcarraldo - making a drama out of a mountain ... and a boat
Posted by Kevin Matthews on July 19, 2008 6:58 PM

The story behind the 1982 film Fitzcarraldo is probably more famous, or should that be infamous, than the movie itself.
I've been wanting to see this film for years having heard about the shenanigans which went on during production, involving carrying a full ship over a mountain, fall outs, injury, Mick Jagger and Amazon natives offering to murder the star.
The Forbidden Kingdom - more kung fu for kids

What do you do when you want to watch Wanted and your girlfriend wants to watch Mama Mia? You go to see The Forbidden Kingdom.
Hong Kong phooey

Kung Fu Panda begins with a bang and ends with a crash but like its hero there's a lot of flab in the middle.
Don't walk but run to see WALL-E

COMING home after watching a preview of WALL-E at Liverpool's FACT cinema my girlfriend asked me which was my favourite bit. After thinking for a moment I said: All of it.

JFK - six seconds in Dallas, three hours of stretching the truth
Posted by Terry Owen on July 3, 2008 2:00 PM
A FEW weeks ago, I was in a pub and overheard a couple of drinkers debating over who exactly was responsible for events at Dealy Plaza.
"You can't rule the Cubans out, the exiles hated the Kennedys," claimed one. "True, but the mafia could have had a hand in it too. Robert Kennedy was determined to bring all the mob bosses down," claimed the other.
