Quadrophenia - The greatest teen movie of them all

THERE has always been a justifiable case that rock operas should be treated with a fair amount of suspicion. As prog rock went into overdrive in the mid 1970s, self indulgence on a physical and musical level threatened to squeeze the life out of genuine rock music as the concept album became the norm.

Charlie Wilson's War

Posted by Kevin Matthews on June 23, 2008 6:12 PM

I approached Charlie Wilson's War with some trepidation.
I had read American journalist and author George Crile's book about the American and Russian face-off in Afghanistan a couple of years back and couldn't quite work out how Hollywood would take the story of the enigmatic, misogynistic US senator from page to screen.
But then I heard that one of the finest writers of his generation was writing the screenplay and I knew I was in for a treat.

Rebecca: my first Hitchcock experience

Posted by Jo Kelly on June 15, 2008 9:04 PM

Curled up on the sofa with my two Spaniels, I had my first Hitchcock experience this weekend.

There's something naughty about watching a film on a sunny, Saturday afternoon with the blinds down and your pyjamas on.

It was the perfect way to delve in to a wealth of classic film I've so far missed.

The Golden Compass - a surprisingly good film

Posted by Kevin Matthews on June 14, 2008 2:00 PM

A few years back I picked up Philip Pullman's fantasy children's novel Northern Lights (yes I am a little old), and in no time at all I had polished off the entire 'His Dark Materials' trilogy.

It's an interesting yarn, which tips its hat in the direction of Tolkien and Pratchett, but which by the end of the final book (The Amber Spyglass) fails to live up to its full potential.

SEX and THE CITY: The Movie

Finally what all women have been waiting for - SATC is back!

I fell in love with Carrie and the gang from the very beginning. Having read the book by Candace Bushnell, I indulged myself in the TV show.

So, after watching seasons one to six of my special shoebox edition and re-living every detail, I set off to the cinema.

I chose the Vue in Southport to wave farewell to my four girlfriends Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda, in this final chapter of friendship and sisterhood.

Letters from Iwo Jima - another Eastwood masterpiece

Posted by Kevin Matthews on June 11, 2008 9:00 AM

I spent last night watching a film which I thought I wouldn’t enjoy, but which I thought was a must see movie all the same.
As it turns out, Letters from Iwo Jima puts a firm stamp on Clint Eastwood’s credentials as one of the finest film makers of his generation.

The Big Lebowski - ten years on and the Coens are still kings of cool

Posted by Terry Owen on June 10, 2008 12:08 PM

EVERYBODY wants to be Jeffrey Lebowski. No, not the stuffy, miserable multi-millionaire Jeffrey Lebowski with the trophy wife.
We're talking about the bummed out, White Russian swigging Credence Clearwater loving Jeffrey Lebowski.

The Constant Gardener - 129 minutes of mind numbing boredom

Posted by Terry Owen on June 9, 2008 11:58 AM

It would appear that somewhere along the line i've completely missed the point. Fernando Meirelles' 2005 drama based on the novel by John Le Carre was met with rave reviews upon its release, largely thanks to the powerful performance of lead actor Ralph (or is it Raif these days?) Fiennes.

Tobe Hooper's 'The Mangler' - a lesson in mangling a great short story

Posted by Kevin Matthews on June 6, 2008 9:20 AM

Not wanting to dwell on the classics I've seen some turkeys in my time, but none as bad as Tobe Hooper's horrifyingly awful 'The Mangler'.
Released in 1995 I spent a hard earned £4.50 to see this film in the cinema. I wuz robbed.
From start to finish The Mangler is bad.

Lawrence of Arabia - an unequalled masterpiece

Posted by Terry Owen on June 5, 2008 2:47 PM

Thank the lord for glorious technicolor.
Had it not been developed, David Lean's classic 1962 epic wouldn't have been half the film it turned out to be.
