Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - Review

Posted by Kevin Matthews on May 25, 2008 1:57 AM |

Indiana Jones is well and truly back.
After an absolute age, the fedora wearing, whip-cracking archeologist is back where he belongs - on the big screen.
But was it worth the wait?

Well, to be perfectly blunt, and this is from a childhood Indy fan who still rates Raiders of the Lost Ark as one of the best films ever made, yes ... and no.
It's great to see Indy back on the big screen where he belongs, and without giving too much away, it's also great to see Marion make a welcome return, but somewhere, someone made a very bad decision about the script.
The plot is bonkers and the dialogue is distinctly dodgy.
It would appear that the army of screenwriters who were drafted in for this project were playing writing by numbers - you can tell when there will be a chase scene, when there will be a fight and at what stage a snake will be thrown in for good measure.
Ray Winstone doesn't live up to my high hopes, and John Hurt and Shia LaBeouf's characters are distinctly two dimensional.
So was I disappointed ... well to be honest yes I was, but that's just because I had such high hopes.
But having said all that, the beginning is great and the tie-in with Raiders is inspired.
And if nothing else, I now know what to do in the event of an atomic explosion - the appliance of science!
